The Blue Sea Artisans Gallery’s featured artist for August is Maya Sorum, a professional watercolor painter since 1982, who has created her art on Hawaii Island for the past 25 years.

From the time she was 4 years old, Sorum knew that art was what she was born to do. She studied oil painting at the University of Wisconsin, but watercolors captured her heart. “There is a magical spirit in watercolors that lends itself to expressing the beauty of nature through images of flowers, animals, and landscapes,” she said.

She has drawn inspiration from her travels to Bali and Europe. Sorum’s love for the islands and nature is reflected in her work. She has led watercolor workshops and private lessons since 1983. She also paints and teaches with the “Artist in Residence” program at the Mauna Lani Bay Resort and Bungalows.

The Blue Sea Artisans Gallery is located at Kona International Market, north side of the Makai building on Luhia Street. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 329-8000.
